I have read EGW statement about drums and church. But I have a question. Is she saying that in the end of time will be like the fanaticism in Indiana where there was a wild type of worship or is she condemning totally the use of drums in worship?

Thank you for contacting the Ellen G. White Estate. Here is the statement you were asking about:
Worship With a Bedlam of Noise
It is impossible to estimate too largely the work that the Lord will accomplish through His proposed vessels in carrying out His mind and purpose. The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit. {2SM 36.2} The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifying truth for this time. Better never have the worship of God blended with music than to use musical instruments to do the work which last January was represented to me would be brought into our camp meetings. The truth for this time needs nothing of this kind in its work of converting souls. A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din and noise, to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit's working. {2SM 36.3}
In its context, the reference seems to refer to things that are excessively noisy and that are uncouth. Mrs. White did not condemn all music, but she was certainly not pleased with the music that was in evidence at Indiana. I find no basis for saying that she approved of any kind of dancing known in modern times; to her, I think this would be covered by her word "uncouth." To return to the subject of drums, we can think of some uses of them that are appropriate. I think of the tympani in such pieces as "Hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah--no problem there. I have heard symphonic bands play religious pieces which use a snare drum in a dignified and appropriate way, such as "Battle Hymn of the Republic." So the problem is not the instrument, but the way it is used.
Drums are controversial in the church today when they are used in other ways than along the lines I have described. You probably know what I am talking about--when they are used to give a rock beat to the music or simply to make the rhythmic element more prominent, even dominant, in the music. These kinds of things are intrusions of the secular into the sacred service. They impart a secular, sensual element to the music, making it sound much more like the popular, secular music that surrounds us in today's culture. It doesn't matter if it is a drum set or a single hand drum, if it is used in this way. This is what people in the church object to today, as far as I can tell.
In some cases, this is probably somewhat different from the situation Mrs. White wrote about, where the loudness and intensity of the music was an issue. (Our amplified instruments today, however, may provide a pretty good parallel.) But if we remember that she objected both to the noise level and to what was "uncouth," we may have a pretty good basis for evaluating the issues that come our way today.
Below my signature I will copy some material for your from the recent compilation, "The Voice in Speech and Song." The last section of the book brings together a good deal of what Mrs. White wrote about music. This is just a part of it. But it may be helpful to see, not just what she said we should NOT do in music, but what our music SHOULD be like.

Chap. 66 - Voice Culture and Song -
A Subject for Every School--I am glad that a musical element has been brought into the Healdsburg School. In every school, instruction in singing is greatly needed. There should be much more interest in voice culture than is now generally manifested. Students who have learned to sing sweet gospel songs with melody and distinctness, can do much good as singing evangelists. They will find many opportunities to use the talent that God has given them, carrying melody and sunshine into many lonely places darkened by sin and sorrow and affliction, singing to those who seldom have church privileges.--RH Aug. 27, 1903. {VSS 414.1} Correct Intonation and Pronunciation--No words can properly set forth the deep blessedness of genuine worship. When human beings sing with the spirit and the understanding, heavenly musicians take up the strain and join in the song of thanksgiving. He who has bestowed upon us all the gifts that enable us to be workers together with God, expects His servants to cultivate their voices so that they can speak and sing in a way that all can understand.
415 It is not loud singing that is needed, but clear intonation, correct pronunciation, and distinct utterance. Let all take time to cultivate the voice so that God's praise can be sung in clear, soft tones, not with harshness and shrillness that offend the ear. The ability to sing is the gift of God; let it be used to His glory.--9T 143, 144. {VSS 414.2} Beauty, Pathos, and Power--Music can be a great power for good; yet we do not make the most of this branch of worship. The singing is generally done from impulse or to meet special cases, and at other times those who sing are left to blunder along, and the music loses its proper effect upon the minds of those present. Music should have beauty, pathos, and power. Let the voices be lifted in songs of praise and devotion. Call to your aid, if practicable, instrumental music, and let the glorious harmony ascend to God, an acceptable offering. {VSS 415.1} But it is sometimes more difficult to discipline the singers and keep them in working order, than to improve the habits of praying and exhorting. Many want to do things after their own style; they object to consultation, and are impatient under leadership. Well-matured plans are needed in the service of God. Common sense is an excellent thing in the worship of the Lord.--Ev 505. {VSS 415.2} Characteristics of Good Singing--Great improvement can be made in singing. Some think that the louder they sing the more music they make; but noise is not music. Good singing is like the music of the birds--subdued and melodious.
416 {VSS 415.3} In some of our churches I have heard solos that were altogether unsuitable for the service in the Lord's house. The long-drawn-out notes and the peculiar sounds common in operatic singing are not pleasing to the angels. They delight to hear the simple songs of praise sung in a natural tone. The songs in which every word is uttered clearly, in a musical tone, are the songs that they join us in singing. They take up the refrain that is sung from the heart with the spirit and the understanding.--Ev 510. {VSS 416.1} Solemnity and Awe--The melody of song, poured forth from many hearts in clear, distinct utterance, is one of God's instrumentalities in the work of saving souls. All the service should be conducted with solemnity and awe, as if in the visible presence of the Master of assemblies.--5T 493. {VSS 416.2} Music a Part of God's Worship Above--Music forms a part of God's worship in the courts above. We should endeavor in our songs of praise to approach as nearly as possible to the harmony of the heavenly choirs. I have often been pained to hear untrained voices, pitched to the highest key, literally shrieking the sacred words of some hymn of praise. How inappropriate those sharp, rasping voices for the solemn, joyous worship of God. I long to stop my ears, or flee from the place, and I rejoice when the painful exercise is ended.--Ev 507, 508. {VSS 416.3}

The same kind of influence came in after the passing of the time in 1844. The same kind of representations were made. Men became excited, and were worked by a power thought to be the power of God.--2SM 36, 37. {VSS 418.1}

When turned to good account, music is a blessing; but it is often made one of Satan's most attractive agencies to ensnare souls. When abused, it leads the unconsecrated to pride, vanity, and folly. When allowed to take the place of devotion and prayer, it is a terrible curse. {VSS 421.2}

God's Choice of Singing--Singing is just as much the worship of God in a religious meeting as speaking, and any oddity or peculiarity cultivated attracts the
423 attention of the people and destroys the serious, solemn impression which should be the result of sacred music. Anything strange and eccentric in singing detracts from the seriousness and sacredness of religious service. {VSS 422.3} Bodily exercise profiteth little. Everything that is connected in any way with religious worship should be dignified, solemn, and impressive. God is not pleased when ministers professing to be Christ's representatives so misrepresent Christ as to throw the body into acting attitudes, making undignified and coarse gestures, unrefined, coarse gesticulations. All this amuses, and will excite the curiosity of those who wish to see strange, odd, and exciting things, but these things will not elevate the minds and hearts of those who witness them. {VSS 423.1} The very same may be said of singing. You assume undignified attitudes. You put in all the power and volume of the voice you can. You drown the finer strains and notes of voices more musical than your own. This bodily exercise and the harsh, loud voice makes no melody to those who hear on earth and those who listen in heaven. This singing is defective and not acceptable to God as perfect, softened, sweet strains of music. There are no such exhibitions among the angels as I have sometimes seen in our meetings. Such harsh notes and gesticulations are not exhibited among the angel choir. Their singing does not grate upon the ear. It is soft and melodious and comes without this great effort I have witnessed. It is not forced and strained, requiring physical exercise. {VSS 423.2}

고 이재현 집사님은 한국 재림교회에 빛과 소금의 역할을 해주신 분입니다. 빛과 소금처럼 소리 없이 헌신과 봉사를 통해 엄청난 신앙의 감화를 끼쳤습니다. 나아가 그분의 광범위한 사회사업으로 한국에서 매해 한분씩 선정하는 장한 어머니이기도 했습니다. 그 분은 원래 기독교 신자가 아니었습니다. 그러나 뜻하지 않께장래가 이주 촉망되는 경기고등학교 재학중인 첫 아들을 잃음으로 말 할 수 없는 슬픔에 잠기게 되었습니다. 그때 고 정사영 박사를 통해 재림 기별을 받아드리게 되었습니다. 당신의 슬픔을 신앙으로 승화시켜 믿음안에서 더 많은 자식을 두기로 작정하고 장학 사업에 전념했습니다. 그야말로 잃은 아들을 생각할 여유도 없을 정도로 교회 안팍으로 그 활동 영역을 넓혔습니다. 사업에 성공하신 남편의 후원으로 동성 장학회를 설립하여 인재 양성에 힘을 쓰셨습니다. 저도 그중의 한 사람입니다. 뿐만 아니라 그분을 통해 재림교인이 되었고 그분의 권유와 도움으로 삼육대학에서 신학을 공부하게 되었습니다. 저에게는 믿음의 어머니였습니다. 오늘의 저의 저됨에는 이집사님의 사랑이 거의 전부라고 말 할 수 있습니다.
한국을 방문할 때 마다 찾아 뵈었습니다. 5년전에 뵈었을 때 저를 알아 보는 데 시간이 걸렸습니다. 세월의 무게를 느꼈습니다. 그리고 마지막으로 뵌 것이 두달 반 전 에덴 양노원에서 였습니다. 저를 알아 보신다는 증거는 볼 위로 흐르는 그분의 눈물이였습니다. 철저하게 재림신도의 건강 생활을 하시던 그분은 옛날 에녹처럼 현세와 내세의 경계를 그저 한 발짜국 옮기는 것으로 세상을 떠날 줄 알았습니다.
