Part 3 My Grandson, Abraham
“Prayer for Abe”
Lord Jesus
You shed Your precious blood.
With the price of blood, you purchased a life –
Abraham Kim.
Most powerful
Full of wisdom
To be used as Your servant
You created him as a son of God.
Attacked by evil
Weakened will power
O Lord, stretch out Your arms of mercy
Today, take him out from the billow of the world.
Lord, hold him in Your arms
Breathe vitality into his brains
Revive his every nerve
And renew all his organs,
His thought, taste and mind.
I ask eagerly for Your guidance –
Help him adore you with all his heart,
Make him born again with Your grace.
"The Day when Abe Left" July, 1973
George and Susan had already left.
And after a month and a half,
Abe was also leaving.
His family had been living with her,
Because Abe’s mother thought that
After her son's family left,
Grandmother would be lonely.
At Kimpo Airport.
Once again a farewell.
This time, the mother of her son-in-law was crying.
Previously, the mother of her daughter-in-law had –
Now, the mother of her son-in-law.
Each one with her husband by her side.
Grandma didn't cry.
Little boy Abe,
Knowing nothing, just smiled.
Grandma didn't want to hurt her daughter
And made an effort to smile.
Pretending calmness,
She sent them on their way.
How could she go back,
The long way home
To the rented house, located in Damtueri?
No one would be waiting for her
When she entered the empty house.
Walking outside the house around and around
Until darkness approached,
Unwillingly she finally entered the house,
Afraid of seeing the empty rooms.
Nowhere were
The loving grandchildren's figures to be seen.
This was the pain of separation
Grandma was afraid of most.
It was the pain of separation.
“Dec. 16, 1987”
Today was dear Abe's birthday. We invited James’s family and Dr. Kim's family and had a birthday party. I pray that Abe will become valuable to the Lord and that he will devote himself to the Lord faithfully in the future. I firmly believe that only as Abe surrenders himself to the Lord will he receive infinite blessings. When all the guests had left, I talked with Abe downstairs and we prayed together. When I came upstairs, it was past 11:30 pm. Abe's prayer was sincere and made an impression on my heart. I saw that the Lord had touched his heart with the Holy Spirit. I was happy. Everything comes from the grace of the Lord. I offer gratitude to the Lord.
“May 20, 1988”
Now I finished all my prayers and it is 6:22am. My Lord gave me the assurance that He answered my prayers for my grandson, Abe. He will drench his heart with a welcome rain of grace and remove the scales from his eyes so that with clear vision he will look to the Lord. He will unplug his ears so that he will hear the Lord’s voice and his hardened heart will become soft, melted by the Lord’s Word. He will be clothed with the Holy Spirit and be a new person. No one can do this work but the Lord who will accomplish it. Praise the Lord! Give glory, thanks and praise to the Lord! Hallelujah!
“My Grandma”
By Abe Kim
My grandma is very nice and thoughtful. She is also kind and understanding. My grandma's hobbies are sewing and reading the Bible. She also likes to exercise and play the piano. My grandma is also a good storyteller. But the stories I like best are when I was young.
At Korea, when I was little, my grandma gave me piggyback rides and fed me. My grandma is a Seventh-day Adventist and never gets angry and is always happy. At Okinawa where we used to live, my grandma and my family would go to places where there was lots of fun. Some of the places we went to were Expo-75, Desmond T. Doss Escapement, and the Koya Zoo. Anyway, I love my grandma and she loves me.
The End
* This is the composition that he wrote in class, and it was put on the wall of his classroom. He gave me this composition later with a picture he drew as a gift and I still have it. He wrote it in good cursive letter and also drew the picture very well.
In 1978, my daughter, who was living in Okinawa, invited me to visit her. My son-in-law was staying in Okinawa working as a military doctor. Abe was 5 years old at that time. His father was very busy taking pictures and his mother was busy taking care of his two younger brothers born within a year of each other. So Abe guided me and explained everything while we were sightseeing. I had such a wonderful time there for three months and I felt like saying, "This is like heaven."
“October 9, 1994”
To the world’s greatest and my loving grandmother, filled with the overabundant love of God,
I wish you a worry-free life filled with happiness and health for another one thousand years. In this upcoming winter, if you plan on walking outside, please walk on the grass. Please do not walk unnecessarily on the icy roads. Also be sure to get plenty of calcium and Vitamin D. Then your bones will be strong and even though you fall down, you won't sustain any fractures. Nonetheless, it is my belief that Jesus will return in the next 15 years. So, in continual good work and in prayer, living a life of faith and truth, I entrust you to God. In these last days, it is my intent to do away with money, power and fame. Instead, I wish to devote my life to spreading the three angels’ message in a loud voice to all people and all nations of the world. Please pray for me every day to be prepared for this great undertaking.
Your loving grandson,
Abe
* I had once fallen down and suffered so he seems to worry about me.
“Dec. 23, 1994”
Dear Abe –
Your name echoes in my heart.
Please cast aside worldly things
And return to the Lord, my dear!
Your self-loving mind
Binds you
But look at the Lord of Salvation and cry out to Him!
In the dark and depressed prison
He will grant you an escape to a bright and new place
Look up to the Lord, who gave His life for you!
My dear Abe, open your ears
And listen for His loving invitation
He is waiting for you, preparing everything for you –
Look up with your eyes to heaven and see the Lord
He is anxiously waiting for you to come back to Him –
Fix your eyes on the eyes of the Lord.
Open the floodgates of your eyes, tears that have been dried up,
Drench your heart with tears that pour down like a waterfall
Throw yourself into His arms, wailing, wailing!
Dear grandson Abe,
Even in this early morning
Grandma prays for your deliverance with my whole heart
Earnestly and with all my strength.
“Abraham”
Abraham
I named you
Abraham
Grow up to be a
faithful man
and devote yourself to God –
I named you with a praying mind.
What a good character you had
When you were a baby!
Everybody who saw you was
filled with gladness.
Abe, how can you live like another person,
Detached from your original nature?
Like the fish that cannot live out of water
You are a person who can live only in the grace of God.
Without delay, cast off the appearance that is covered with untruth
Praise the Lord with the voice that was given you as a gift from God
Lift your voice and proclaim the Glory of the Lord
Return your features and attitudes to their natural condition.
Dear grandson Abe
Dedicate yourself to the Lord only
The blessings of wisdom and health
That He gave you – rebuild your life!
I am afraid that you waste time on the Lord's Day.
When is the Day, we don't know clearly –
Day by day it is coming nearer
Let us make today the time to welcome the Lord with delight.
Dear Abe, open your heart and welcome your Lord,
Let Him come into your heart and accomplish His will in your life.
“July 1, 1993”
Dear grandson Abe,
I heard that it took you three days to drive to Loma Linda. Although that is very far away, I often think you are still here. Susan is using the room that we were sharing and I still remember clearly in my mind images of you sleeping, studying, and living.
I had been living downstairs, but after your family moved back from California, we shared the room. You put your bed on one side of the room and my bed was closer to the heater to keep me warm.
You are truly a generous man. I went to bed early and woke up early, while you were the opposite, but we never had any trouble. You used to study downstairs in the living room at night and even when you studied in our room you never troubled me. I had a habit of going to the bathroom during the night and I got up early in the morning and made noises, but you did not show any negative emotions.
Dear grandson, when I was studying at Lake Michigan College and was taking a reading class, I would bring an assignment that was difficult for me and you always helped me and treated me nicely. You were truly given a nice character from birth like Barnabas. There is a saying in Korean, "Gum sang chum hwa,” which means “making still more beautiful.” So I want to give you a piece of advice. Dear grandson, if you add only this one thing, and consider it and make it yours, your life will be a victorious life.
“Temperance.” I hope you think of this word deeply. When your father was stationed in Okinawa, Japan as an Air Force doctor, I visited you for about three months. You were five years old at that time. You were always absorbed in reading. While other children read cartoons, you gazed at pictures of animals or plants. When I asked you questions about animals or plants, you answered all of them so well that it was amazing. When we went to the botanical garden and the aquarium, you always explained everything precisely. Your dad was busy taking pictures and your mom was busy taking care of your two younger brothers.
When I got up early in the morning and read the Bible (we shared a room then, too), as soon as you woke up, you ran to me and read the Bible storybooks. One day, you read six stories. You concentrate on one thing consistently. This has always been your personality and we admired and praised you. But now you have grown up and you have so many things to read around you. You need to select good books to give nourishment to you. Otherwise, the things you read will become burdensome and tiresome mentally and spiritually.
Dear grandson, our God blessed you with His unlimited love and gave you an abundance of talents and strength. I am afraid that if you do not use them wisely they will be harmful to you. Use your talents to help others and give glory to God. Then they will be profitable to you, too.
Be careful in what you see and what you listen to and make the Lord happy. I trust in the Lord who has always answered my prayers.
I wish your life will be filled with the Lord's grace.
Bye,
Grandma
Think of the Lord at every moment
Look to Him always
Walk with Him everywhere.
Dear Grandma,
I love you very much. Thank you for all your love and concern. I hope to become a prosperous man someday, both spiritually and materially. I hope you live a long time and see your great-great grandchildren.
Love,
Abe
On May 2, 1994, the card that Abe sent me for Mother's Day was especially beautiful. Along with the beautiful phrases in the card, he added this in Korean
Grandma,
Live for a long time. I aspire to become a worthy and honorable man.
Abe.
I thank you for your careful love
It only can be from above
I thank you for your loving care;
And for me, your daily prayer.
Thanks for helping me see God
And the food you grow in the soil
Grandma, I can't pay you back
For all your love and that's a fact!
Happy Birthday Grandma,
I am sorry I forgot it was your birthday. I couldn't buy anything so I hope this poem will last in your memory forever.
Lovingly,
Your grandson, Abe
* Since then, he never forgot grandma's birthday. Now on my birthday and holidays and every month he sends me pocket money. What a sincere grandson he is!
“The Lord of Love” Dec. 22, 1994
The Lord is love;
When pressed with sorrow
To me You are the Lord of love
The prayers for the grandchildren
Not answered, and seemed delayed
Yet, You were listening to my prayers
Dear grandson Abe,
Even in this early morning, Grandma prays for your deliverance with my whole heart, earnestly and with all my strength.
Dear grandson Abe,
With blessings of wisdom and health that God gave you
Dedicate yourself to the Lord only and rebuild your life
I am afraid that you waste time on the Lord's Day
When is the Day, we don't know clearly
Day by day it is coming nearer
Let's make today the best to welcome the Lord with delight
Dear Abe, open your heart and welcome your Lord
Let Him come into your heart and accomplish His will in your life
With blessings of wisdom and health that God gave you
Dedicate yourself to the Lord only and rebuild your life
I am afraid that you waste time on the Lord's Day
When is the Day, we don't know clearly
Day by day it is coming nearer
Let's make today the best to welcome the Lord with delight
Dear Abe, open your heart and welcome your Lord
Let Him come into your heart and accomplish His will in your life.
What is your role?
Are you a worker of God?
Or a worker of an enemy?
Elijah told the people,
"How long will you waver between two opinions?"(1Kings 18:21 NIV)
Now is the time that you should make a decision
Rapidly, without delay, the time is coming
If the house is on fire, do you hesitate in the house?
And accept the same destiny as the blazing house?
